GANGLION CYST EXCISION

Ganglion cysts may arise from the palm or dorsum of the wrist and hand. They can also form in the palm and in the fingers. These bumps may rarely be another type of tumor but ganglion cysts are the most common.

Excision of these masses can usually be done with local anesthetic with a small incision. Depending on the location, you may need sedation and an IV for the surgery.

The procedure usually takes about 10-15 minutes and is closed with an absorbable suture. The mass is sent for pathology to ensure that it is benign. A soft dressing is placed and removed after 3 days. Occasionally you may get a splint to be left on for 7 days.
